Beggar arrested in Abuja with N500,000 and $100

-

Beggar has N500,000 in her possession, with another $100. This sparks suspicion of the FCT social services department

As of October 2021, the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation (NDIC), says 99.4 per cent of bank accounts in the country contain less than N500,000 deposits. And with about 8 million bank accounts in Nigeria and approximately 40 million bank account holders, there are less than one million Nigerians with more than N500,000 with liquid cash savings.

A beggar, Hadiza Ibrahim, is among the one million Nigerians with more than N500,000 cash and another $100 (N57,000) in her possession.

According to Punch Newspaper, the discovery that a beggar has more than half a million naira in her possession threw residents into confusion.

According to the newspaper, the spokesperson for the Federal Capital Territory Administration, Social and Development Secretariat, Shaka Sunday, confirmed that the woman was in the agency’s custody at the Bwari area council.

The beggar, the FCT official said, has yet to explain how she came about the money found on her.

He said: “We caught the woman with $100 and N500,000. The lady is still in our centre in Bwari.  She is undergoing profiling because she has not been able to give us all the relevant information and how she came about the money.”

Just last week, the Special Control Unit Against Money Laundry (SCUML) advised non governmental organisations to always vet their prospective beneficiaries before giving them alms. The reason, SCUML says, was that terrorists also use beggars to crowdfund their operations.
