Stakeholders in Bauchi State have called on the Governor Mohammed Abubakar-led administration to rehabilitate Gubi Dam Treatment Plant to ease the problem of water scarcity in the state.
The call was made by stakeholders from Bauchi, Kirfi, Alkaleri and Toro local goverment areas of Bauchi state during a one-day sensitization meeting organized by Network for Civil Society Organization on WASH (NEWSAN) held in Bauchi on Tuesday.
The stakeholders while presenting their priority needs at the meeting emphasized on the need to make Gubi Dam Treatment Plant very functional to meet the water needs of the people.
They expressed worry on the dilapidated structure of some of the equipment at the dam, stressing the need for provision of new and sophisticated equipment at the dam that will meet the water needs of the people.
The stakeholders also called for construction of more motorized and hand pump bore holes in the in the communities.
They attributed lack of clean water to the causes of water-borne diseases, which according to them, has claimed several lives in the area.
They also enjoined the government to rehabilitate the broken boreholes in the four councils.
In her address, Deborah Kogi, Programme Manager of Women Empowerment Initiative (WEIN), Bauchi chapter, stressed the need for clean water and sanitation in communities to avoid communicable diseases.
She said, “We must always ensure we drink and cook with clean water as well as make our environment clean to live a healthy life.
According to her, the aim of the meeting is to sensitize stakeholders in the need to always demand their WASH needs from elected office holders.
