Tofa passed away in the early hours of Monday at the Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital, Kano after a brief illness. He died at the age of 74

Former Presidential Candidate of the defunct National Republican Convention (NRC), Alhaji Bashir Othman Tofa is dead.

The Guardian newspaper, quoting a family source, said  Tofa passed in the early hours of Monday at Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital, Kano after a brief illness.

Tofa died 29 years after contesting and losing a presidential election against late Chief Mashood Abiola, an election that was botched by the military junta of General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida.

The death of the elder statesman and chieftain of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) early went viral on social media last Friday but was later put to rest by the family source who confirmed that the business tycoon was only critically sick then.

The burial arrangement is to be announced but the deceased may be buried today in line with Islamic rites.

Tofa’s death came a few days after the ancient city of Kano lost one of its illustrious and foremost medical doctors in Northern Nigeria, Dr Ahmad Datti.

Bashir Tofa is a Kanuri Muslim who hails from Kano State. Tofa was the National Republican Convention (NRC) candidate in the annulled Nigeria’s June 12, 1993 presidential election, which was organised by the military government of General Ibrahim Babangida. He died on January, 3, 2022 after brief illness.

Late Tofa was born in Kano to a Kanuri family on June 20, 1947 and died on January 3, 2022. He had his primary education at Shahuci Junior Primary, Kano and then continued studies at City Senior Primary School in Kano. From 1962 to 1966, he attended Provincial College, Kano. After completing his studies at the Provincial school, he worked for Royal Exchange Insurance company from 1967 to 1968. From 1970 to 1973, he attended City of London College. Tofa’s sojourn into politics started in 1976 when he was a councilor of Dawakin Tofa Local Government Council, in 1977, he was elected a member into the Constituent Assembly. During the Nigerian Second Republic, 

Tofa was at various times the secretary of the Kano branch of NPN, he later became the party’s national financial secretary and was a national member of the Green Revolution National Committee.
