The coach of the Nigeria U20 team, Manu Garba, has maintained his team is still not the best at the 2015 AYC despite winning two straight games and racking up seven goals.
The Flying Eagles became the first team to qualify for the 2015 U20 World Cup in New Zealand after they tallied six points from two matches with the 4-1 victory over Congo.
They will face Cote d’Ivoire in a final Group A match on Saturday in Mbour to determine the overall leaders of the group phase.
However, Manu said his team will only be regarded as the best when they win a seventh AYC title on March 22.
He said: “We have done very well so far but we can only be the best team of the competition when we win it.
“We have some very good sides like Ghana and Cote d’Ivoire, so we cannot afford to be complacent. The target now is to take the trophy back to Nigeria.
Congo coach Paolo Berretttini congratulated Nigeria for their victory, but said his young team will keep working hard because they have a bright future ahead of them.
Meanwhile, Taiwo Awoniyi has again been voted man of the match by CAF after the Flying Eagles brushed past Congo 4-1 to qualify for the U20 World Cup on Wednesday.
Awoniyi, 17, was also picked by CAF as the top performer for the Flying Eagles opening day win over hosts Senegal at the weekend.
On Wednesday, Awoniyi’s rampaging runs led to two penalties, before he fired home a wonder goal for Nigeria’s fourth against Congo.
He is now the leading scorer of the tournament with three goals.
The player of Imperial Academy was also voted the MVP of the expanded Super 4 in Abuja last month.
