Atiku pitches his joint ticket with Obi as strongest opposition, cites their “similar political ideologies”

Atiku Abubakar has floated a joint ticket with Peter Obi as the strongest and most credible platform to dislodge Bola Tinubu from the Presidential Villa in 2027 if Nigerians are indeed serious about breaking the yoke of hardship on them.

The former Vice President flew the kite on the “Mic On Podcast” through his Digital Media Strategy Adviser Demola Olarewaju, arguing that a partnership between him and Obi could create a “co-presidency” allowing Nigerians to benefit from both leaders’ ideas.

It is on record that Atiku and Obi would have defeated Tinubu if they had combined their votes in the 2023 ballot, rather than split them, a scenario likely to recur in 2027 if they again contest separately.

And if the romour is true that former President Goodluck Jonathan will also have another shot at the Villa in 2007, further splitting opposition votes, Tinubu will be home and dry – even without rigging it as generally anticipated.

“I think the best bet would be to have the two of them [Atiku and Obi] on that ticket and give Nigerians this sort of sense of co-presidency,” Olarewaju stressed.

He described Atiku as a resilient politician who consistently supports fellow candidates after losing primaries.

“He lost the primaries to Goodluck Jonathan in 2011 and worked for him, delivering Adamawa State in that election. That’s who Atiku Abubakar is.”

He also underscored the importance of youth participation in politics, saying the African Democratic Congress (ADC) plans to reserve 35 to 50 per cent of its positions for young people and women.

“Nigerians deserve a party that recognises the strength of young people, Gen Z, Gen Alpha, even, and harnesses their potential.”

Olarewaju added that Atiku has expressed willingness to step down for a younger candidate if defeated in the primaries but stressed he jointly with Obi remains the strongest opposition candidate.

“The strongest ticket that the opposition can present is the marriage of Atiku and Obi and their similar political ideologies make such a partnership feasible and strategically strong.”
