The condemnation was made by the Chairman of the association, Prof. Moyosore Ajao, during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Monday in Ilorin.

The news that a 400-level student of the Department of Microbiology, Salaudeen Waliyu, popularly known as Captain Walz, allegedly beat his lecturer to a coma went viral recently.

The student was alleged to have attacked the lecturer for insisting that he should present evidence that he observed the mandatory Students Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES).

Reacting to the incident, Ajao condemned that act and demanded justice from the university authority for their colleague who was brutalized by the student.

He assured everyone that the union will never allow the dastardly act to go unaddressed. He also said that they are pursuing the case to preserve the sanctity of the citadel of learning, where such acts are not permitted.

“It is not just because the lecturer is a female but because she is a human being and violence is never tolerated in ASUU, more or less in a university where character and learning are the essences of it.

“ASUU is patiently waiting on what the university management is going to do before we now apply our action.

“But I can tell you that the union is not sleeping on the matter and we are never going to allow such matters to be swept under the carpet,” Ajao said.

He went further to insist that the university authority must deal with the matter decisively to forestall a possible recurrence in the future. He also stated that though the students of the institution are largely well behaved, this is a one-off occurrence.

“The university must demonstrate the capacity to deal with such an act, apart from that, they must ensure that such a thing never happens again.

“You can’t have a student population of over 50,000 and you expect all of them to be disciplined.” he said.

Professor Ajao told NAN that the assault has already been reported to the law enforcement agencies for necessary action.
