The former Director General for the National Sports Commission (NSC), Dr. Amos Adamu; and the Chief Executive Officer of Padmozi Sports, organizers of the Okpepe Road Race, Mr. Mike Itemagbor, are some of the high-profile Nigerians that have confirmed that they would work as volunteers during the 21st African Senior Athletics Championships.

Others include permanent secretaries, commissioners, captains of industries as well as other VIPs within and outside Delta state.

In a statement issued by Olukayode Thomas, Head of Media & Publicity for CAA Asaba 2018, the Chairman of the Local Organizing Committee, Chief Solomon Ogba expressed delight that the true spirit of volunteerism will be showcased in Asaba.

Ogba said he was particularly delighted with the interest being shown by some highly-respected individuals and according to him, the younger ones can learn from this noble course chosen by the ‘celebrity volunteers’.

“We are happy that we are showing that in Nigeria, people can willingly submit themselves to support a good course through working as volunteers. Across the world, this has been the norm and thankfully Asaba and Delta state are also setting a good example for Nigeria and Africa as a whole,” the LOC boss said.

On his part, Itemagbor said that he had always been an advocate for volunteers at his Silver Labelled Okpekpe road race but right now he is ready to lead by example to actually work as a volunteer himself.

“We hope the younger ones can learn from us and chose to support great things like this, the fulfillment is in seeing this championship succeed and that supersedes any monetary gains and otherwise,” he stated.

Already, the Security Sub Committee for CAA Asaba 2018 headed by Navy Commodore Omatseye Nesiama (rtd) has since begun the screening of the thousands of applicants ready to work as volunteers at the 2018 African Senior Athletics Championships.
