Arteta hails Wenger after Arsenal unveil his statue at Emirates

Arteta was signed by Wenger from Everton in 2011 and went on to spend five years at the North London club

Arsenal coach, Mikel Arteta has eulogised his former boss, Arsene Wenger, following the unveiling of the Frenchman’s statue at the Emirates Stadium.

The North London club recently erected and unveiled a statue of the legendary Arsenal manager outside the Stadium that he helped to build during his time at the club.

Reacting to the development, Arteta recalled how the French tactician brought him to the club and gave him the opportunity to play for the Gunners.

He went on to thank Wenger for not only bringing him to the Premier League giants. but also giving him the captain’s armband during his time at the club.  

Speaking to Metro, Arteta said: “With a statue now at the stadium, Arsene can have that recognition and be here at our club forever.  

“I’m so grateful to have played for Arsene at this club in my career.

“He chose me to be one of his players and selected me to be the captain of the club and that’s something I will never forget.”

Wenger after his appointment in October 1996, became the first ever non-British manager to win the Premier League title.

He won three league championships in all, following his 1998 success with further triumphs in 2001/02 and 2003/04.

He also went 49 league matches without defeat – a top-flight record, which earned Arsenal the tag, “the invincibles”. 

Arsene is also the FA Cup’s most successful manager, having won the competition seven times (1998, 2002, 2003, 2005, 2014, 2015 and 2017).

He signed Arteta from Everton in 2011 and the Spaniard went on to spend five years at the club, appearing a total of 110 times and scoring 14 goals.
