Arsenal travelled to London Stadium to take on City-rival, West Ham United who were involved in the Europa League semi-finals midweek.

The visitors knew it was a must-win game after Spurs leapfrogged them into the 4th position earlier in the day when they dispatched Leicester 3-1.

The game started slowly as both sides cancelled each other out and they were unable to test the two goalkeepers.

Arsenal opened the scoring in the 38th minute when Rob Holding headed The Gunners into the lead from a corner after a good run, and a shot by Eddie Nketiah was saved by the goalkeeper.

The goal is the English defender’s first goal since 2019 and it moved Arsenal above Spurs back into the top four for a moment.

West Ham equalised in the last minute of the first half when Declan Rice spotted the run of Vladimir Coufal, who crossed from the right to find Jarrod Bowen and his shot took a slight deflection on its way into the net.

The visitors were under pressure from the start of the second half but Bukayo Saka earned them a corner, and a rebound from it was picked up by Gabriel Martinelli who found Gabriel, who in turn headed it in, to restore Arsenals’ lead.

West Ham then threw everything at the visitors but their goalkeeper, Aaron Ramsdale was rarely tested as they held on to win the match 2-1 and move back into 4th position.
