The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has to limit the charges in the ongoing prosecution of suspects involved in the arms purchase scandal in order not to give them the leeway to escape, the commission’s acting Chairman Ibrahim Magu has said.
He spoke during an interactive meeting with members of the House of Representatives Standing Committee on Financial Crimes chaired by Hon. Kayode Oladele on Tuesday in Abuja.
Magu explained that EFCC took the decision after a careful consideration of the situation on ground.
He said the commission would do everything within its power after securing conviction to retrieve all the stolen money.
When asked to give an estimated figure of the amount the commission would recover by the end of year, Magu said it was very difficult to give exact figure because the commission has to get full details from all branches before it can come to any conclusion.
On the commission’s permanent headquarters, Magu said the project is about 70 per cent completed while appealing to the lawmakers to appropriate adequate funds for the project as the commission needs N8.1 billion to complete it.
After listening to the EFCC boss, members of the committee resolved to support the commission to fight corruption in line with the resolve of the President Muhammadu Buhari administration.
