Apapa retains Customs flagship command status with 16% rise in revenue

Apapa, the cash cow command of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), garnered N1.02 trillion revenue in full year 2022 (FY 2022), 16 per cent higher than N870 billion in 2021.
“This feat was made possible because of our officers and men’s resilience in blocking revenue leakages and ensuring that all unpaid declarations and unutilised Pre-Arrival Assessment Reports were traced and accounted to the Federal Government coffers,” said Comptroller Malanta Yusuf, Customs Area Controller.
He disclosed N28.2 billion worth of commodities was exported through the command in 2022 with a total $68.5 million Free on Board export consignments and total tonnage of 6.4 million metric tonnes.
“Items exported through Apapa port last year 2022 included steel bars, agricultural produce such as Hibiscus, Sesame, Cocoa, Cashew nuts, Ginger, Soya Beans and mineral products,” Yusuf said.
“It will be recalled that from the second quarter of last year, the industry experienced a backdrop in trade, occasioned by fluctuation in exchange rate and a sharp drop in the purchasing power by the consumers which made trade unpredictable.”

157 containers seized
“In the year under review, a total number of 157 containers with a duty paid value of N14.4bn were seized, as against 102 containers with DPV of N32bn seized in the year 2021.
Yusuf said fake and prohibited drugs without National Agency for Food Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) certification and overdose drugs of Tramadol topped the list of seizures last year, per The PUNCH.
“Other items seized included codeine syrup, foreign parboiled rice, vegetable oil, processed/unprocessed wood, used clothing, etc.
“So far, a total number of 60 suspects were arrested in connection with some of the seizures and are at various stages of investigation and prosecution by other agencies of government we handed over to.”
