Coming on the heels of the defection of Peter Nwoboshi, Senator representing Delta North Senatorial District in the National Assembly from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC), another senator, Hassan Mohammed Gusau, of Zamfara Central on Tuesday dumped the opposition PDP for the ruling APC. The senator cited absence of internal democracy in the Zamfara chapter of the PDP as reason for his defection.
Senator Gusau’s letter dated 28th June 2021 was read at Plenary by the President of the Senate, Senator Ahmad Lawan.
His movement comes ahead of the speculated formal defection of the State Governor, Bello Muhammad Watawalle from the PDP to the APC.
The deluge of defections from the PDP lately, is seen as a major challenge to its survival as a political party and its desire to return to power, six years after being dislodged by the APC. Nwaoboshi who left the PDP on Friday, June 25, had literally dismissed the party as a dead platform awaiting interment. Earlier, Cross River state governor, Ben Ayade and his Ebonyi State counterpart, Dave Umahi, had dumped the party. There are fears that other high-profile members of the party may join in the desertion.
