Night protest in Benin, the Edo State capital, resulted in a suffocating gridlock for commuters.

Edo is the gateway state for travellers journeying mostly from the South Western part of the country to the South East and South South.

The protesters seized the major route into Benin, forcing travellers to spend the night in their vehicles.

Stranded passengers who spoke to TheNiche were worried that extending the protest into the night could jeopardize the security of innocent Nigerians.

“By 2 am, boys could start robbing passengers with guns. The police station here at the Benin toll gate has already closed their door. So, people are on their own here,” a commercial bus driver  said.

One of the  passengers trapped in the gridlock wondered what the fate of people who might be needing medical emergency would be.

There are fears that the  protest has since moved away from #EndSARS to a more political demand, with some even chanting “No to Buhari.”
