Aisha Yesufu says JAMB’s N50bn revenue is extortion of poor, vulnerable students

Aisha Yesufu also argued that the trend may widen the education inequality gap between the rich and poor students

Human rights activist and social media influencer, Aisha Yesufu, has said the N50bn allegedly made by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), suggests the federal government is extorting poor and  vulnerable students.

She made this known on Thursday in a post on her X handle, where she argued that JAMB is not supposed to be a money making organization.

Yesufu went on to say the money charged by the examination body for the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME), might end up widening the educational inequality gap between the rich and poor students in the country.

Her statement followed remark by the Vice President, Kashim Shettima that Prof Ishaq Oloyede, JAMB Registrar, made over N50bn for the Federal Government within a year, while speaking during a public engagement organised by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

According to the Vice President, JAMB never made up to $1m for the Federal Government before Oloyede assumed office.

Reacting to the statement by the VP, Aisha Yesufu asserted that the Education body is overcharging Nigerian students.

Speaking via her social media page, she tweeted: “Let me say what I have said before. JAMB is not supposed to be a money making organization.

“JAMB making 50bn means JAMB is over charging students.

“I will even call it extortion of poor and vulnerable students and widening the educational inequality gap.”
