Aeronautical information data has been boosted with the installation of radio navigation RNAV/RNP, an airborne computer-based navigation system, according to Aeronautical Information Service Association of Nigeria (AISAN) National President, Babatunde Shittu,
Speaking to journalists in Lagos on the essence of World AIS Day, he said the system is data-dependent and aeronautical data is a critical component.
Shittu stressed the importance of completing AIS automation, adding that the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) has developed a road map to reflect the evolution.
It will also reflect the transition from Aeronautical Information Service (AIS) to Air Traffic Management (ATM).
There is a global concept to accommodate the rapid changes from manual AIS services to digital.
In a related development, the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA) said it has attained a critical milestone in the implementation of the Controller-Pilot Data Link Communication (CPDLC) project with the Data Link Connectivity and implementation site survey for Kano and Lagos Area Control Centres (ACCs).
The exercise was done by SITA engineers in collaboration with NAMA officials.
A successful inspection was carried out on the last mile connectivity from SITA hub, Lagos, to NAMA Lagos ACC.
The last mile connectivity has fibre and radio components for redundancy.
The next task would involve the technical and operational training of personnel as well as Factory Acceptance Test (FAT).
