Again, gunmen storm Abuja school, abduct Vice Principal

-

Abuja has recorded two school invasions by bandits within 48 hours, and it could get worse unless they are decisively stopped

Abuja is not Zamfara, or Katsina or Kaduna with the vast forest that could serve as a hideout for bandits. But within the span of 48 hours, two abductions have taken place in Abuja, and all in schools.

The abduction of six people at the University of Abuja was the second, an earlier abduction had taken place last Saturday. Several others have taken place in the past that didn’t make the headline.

The newspaper quoted a teacher, who said the kidnappers wielding sophisticated weapons invaded the staff quarters of the school.

He said some of the kidnappers surrounded the quarters, while other gangs scaled the fence into the compound from where they broke into his apartment and whisked him away.

He said the kidnappers tied down the security guard manning the gate before they forced the victim’s door open.

“In fact, even some teachers that are staying inside the quarters could not be able to come out because of the sporadic gunshots,” he said.

The newspaper confirmed the abduction of the vice principal from the chairman of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) wing of the Nigeria Union Teachers (NUT), Comrade Stephen Knabayi.

He said the incident happened a few days after the Chief Imam of Yabgoji Central Mosque, Abubakar Abdullahi Gbedako, who is also the vice-principal of Junior Secondary School, Kwaita, still in Kwali area council of Abuja, was abducted.

Knabayi said the union had written several emails to the FCT Administration of Abuja and some area council chairmen to complain over the incessant abduction of its members.

The newspaper said when it contacted the spokesperson of the FCT police command, DSP Adeh Josephine, she said she was in a meeting, promising to call back, but never did.
