AFN to enhance Team Nigeria’s performance at CAA Region ll Champs at University Sports Complex, Ghana

The Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) aims to further enhance Team Nigeria Athletes’ performance at the Confederation of African Athletics (CAA), Region II Seniors Athletics Championship, taking place from 15th to 16th August 2025 at the University Sport Complex, Ghana.

This decision was reached at the CAA Region II Executive Committee meeting, held in Abeokuta, in conjunction with the CAA U-18/U-20 Championships.

According to Chief Tonobok Okowa, President of CAA, Region II, the championship will witness the convergence of elite athletes from West Africa in Accra for a two-day competition, showcasing speed, mental toughness, and national pride.

Approximately 450 athletes and officials are expected to participate, competing for top honors and potential qualification for the World Athletics Championships in specific events.

Defending champion Nigeria, Host Ghana, Benin Republic, Togo, Niger Republic, Burkina Faso, Senegal, Liberia, Sierra Leone, Mali, Guinea, Cote D’Ivoire and others are expected to contend for medals.

Expectedly, Ghana Athletics Association (GAA), is urging all lovers of the beautiful sports to fill the stands and show the world the true spirit of Ghanaian hospitality and sporting excellence.

Team Nigeria Showcased a 22 member contingent of of top athletes that topped the medal table at the end of the 2-day thrilling experience with 13 gold, 4 silver and a bronze medal ahead of host Ghana and Burkina Faso.

Athletes of note that participated in last year’s edition includes Elo Esther Joseph, Women’s 400m, Women’s 100m hurdles  Faith Osamuyi, Women’s 100m, Justina Tiana Eyakpobeyan, Men’s 400m – Emmanuel Ojeli, Women’s 800m, Comfort James, Women’s 1500m, Ronke Akanbi, Men’s Javelin, Samuel Adams Kure, Women’s Javelin,  Victoria Kparipa,  Men’s 4X100m ,  Mix relay 4×400,  Women’s 4X400m, Men’s Long Jump, Emmanuel Njoku and Women’s Long Jump, Prestina Ochonogor came top with golden medals.

Silver medalists are Men’s 100m, Israel Okon , Women’s 100m, Olayinka Olajide,  Women’s 200m, Olayinka Olajide, Women’s 400m, Patience George Okon and Women’s 200m, Precious Nzeakor won bronze medal.

Some of thees athletes went ahead to represent Nigeria at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games in France.
