The AthIetics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) has commended the appointment of Bukola Olopade as the new Director General of the National Sports Commission (NSC) by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Thursday.
AFN President, Chief Tonobok Okowa, in his reaction said it was an appointment well merited following Olopade’s tremendous pedigree in sports management development and marketing.
“This appointment will benefit all stakeholders in sports, coming from experience that would impact positively on Nigerian Sports sector,” Okowa said.
The Confederation of Africa Athletics (CAA) Vice-president expressed optimism that both the NSC Chairman and DG will put the Sports Commission in proper perspective and help it excel.
“For the first time in a while, we have someone who understands our language. We welcome you to the sports sector; you’re the best thing that has happened to Nigerian sports in a long time,” Okowa added.
Olopade, aside being Director General of the NSC is also the current Chairman of the Local Organising Committee of the National Sports Festival holding in his home state, Ogun State in January 2025.
He is also the Organizer of the biggest Marathon race in Africa.
The appointment is one of those announced on Thursday by the presidency in a statement issued by Bayo Onanuga, the Special Adviser to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Information and Strategy.
