Human rights lawyer, Deji Adeyanju has disclosed that popular social media influencer and critic, Martins Otse, aka VeryDarkMan, has been detained by the Nigeria Police Force.
He made this known on Thursday night via a post he shared on his official Facebook page.
According to Adeyanju, VeryDarkMan was arrested after honouring an invitation from the police.
Prior to this development, a recent footage shared by the VeryDarkMan, captured him in a police uniform, describing himself as the Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP) of the Online Division.
Subsequently, the Nigerian Police via a statement issued by its spokesperson, Muyiwa Adejobi, condemned the social critic’s unauthorized use of its uniform and went on to say it has initiated an investigation into the matter.

The statement read partly, “It is important to remind the public that the unauthorised use of police uniforms, insignia, or accoutrements constitutes a criminal offence, as stipulated in Section 251 of the Criminal Code Law and Section 133 of the Penal Code Law, and is subject to strict penalties.
“While the Nigeria Police Force recognises and supports the creativity of young Nigerians in the content creation space, we strongly caution against the misuse of police uniforms or symbols. Unauthorised use of these items undermines the values and integrity of the Force and will not be tolerated.”
Amid the backlash, VeryDarkMan released a video on Thursday apologizing for using attire resembling the official police uniform.
However, while briefing Nigerians on recent developments in the saga, Adeyanju, who is VeryDarkMan’s lawyer, said his client was incarcerated despite turning himself in.
Speaking via his verified social media page, he said, “Our client, VDM has been detained after honouring police invitation just like yesterday.
“VDM has been consistent in saying the Nigerian Police are our friends even when we all know they are not”.
