Human rights lawyer and popular influencer, Deji Adeyanju has condemned the decision of the President Bola Tinubu-led administration to consent to a proposed hike in call and data tariffs.
He made his feelings known in a post shared on his X page, where he described the administration as a “government from hell.”
TheNiche had earlier reported that the Federal Government approved a hike of telecommunications service by 50 percent.
Prior to this, Communications and Digital Economy Minister, Bosun Tijani, had justified FG’s decision saying, “I think the telecommunications tariff increase should not be more than 30 to 60 per cent.
“The sector is about investment in infrastructure; the technologies are changing, so you have to keep investing in technology. Things like 3G will be decommissioned at some point because you have higher technology, so they have to keep investing in equipment. And we all know that there is inflation.
“For us, as we are protecting them, we want to keep importing capital in the sector. The foreign direct investment in our sector in the first quarter of 2024, driven by telcos, was close to $199 million; this is bigger than the entire inflow in 2023.
“We can’t get to a $1 trillion economy if mobile network operators are investing at a snail’s pace.”

Reacting to the increase in telecommunications tariff, Adeyanju said Tinubu’s administration had “vowed to finish off Nigerians with sufferings”
He went on to warn those defending the incumbent president from attacking him online, adding that he has zero tolerance for such this year.
Speaking via his verified social media handle, he tweeted, “They just increased tariff for all phone calls in the country. The government has vowed that it must finish off Nigerians with suffering. A government from hell.
“This year I have zero tolerance for bullshit. If you come to my timeline to defend rubbish, I will block you. You can’t be praising a government that is destroying the lives of Nigerians and the economy daily and defending oppressors.”
The last time telecoms tariffs increased came in 2013.
