Committee members, terms of reference

Mamman said the committee is mandated to review the role of any ministries, departments and agencies (MDAs) or their officials in the facilitation of the recognition and procurement of such fake certificates, per reporting by The Nation.

The committee members include Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) Registrar Ishaq Oloyede, Youths Minister Jamila Bio-Ibrahim, and Foreign Affairs Minister, Yusuf Tuggar.

One of the committee’s key terms of reference is to examine private universities established in the past 15 years.

The focus is on whether they have the required facilities, appropriate management structures, adequate funding for programmes, and staff (full-time, contract, adjunct, visiting, among other types).

The National Universities Commission (NUC) periodically conducts accreditation of university courses but this new additional scrutiny aims to ensure compliance with specific criteria.

Nigeria currently has 147 private universities, as listed on the NUC website, and 107 of them were established in the past 15 years.
