The demolition of a popular brothel, Chris Garden and Guest Inn, at Dakibiu, Jabi, a suburb of Abuja by the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA) of Federal Capital Territory Abuja, has affected the business and fortunes of sex workers, commonly known as harlots, as they groaned for loss of accommodation for their business.
TheNiche gathered that owners and occupants of structures in the area had been given demolition notices, thereby asking them to vacate from the structures marked for demolition.
According to reports, as early as 9.00 am before the commencement of the demolition exercise on Wednesday September 16, streets within Dakibiu were filled with people, including residents hurrying to cart away their properties before officials arrived with bulldozers.
At about noon, the officials of FCDA accompanied by armed policemen and journalists arrived with the bulldozers and the first port of call was the Chris Garden and Guest Inn, a popular brothel situate at the north end of Dakibiu.
Within a very short time, the structure holding about 36 rooms were demolished while the sex workers and other occupants watched with dismay and anguish.
An affected sex worker who expressed her feelings to journalists said they were not given adequate notice before the demolition exercise.
“This is unfair, at least they should have given as at least two weeks to pack out and find another place to stay,” she said.
After the exercise, scavengers started milling around the debris of the structure, looking for valuables, picking rods and some other building materials.
