Abuja has on paper acknowledged that more than four million children in the North East and North West are suffering from malnutrition, amid Bola Tinubu gaslighting citizens and pampering himself with a N150 billion presidential jet and a N5 billion yacht, even though there is no sea or river in the capital city for him to sail the boat.
The Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare disclosed that over four million kids in two of the six northern zones alone are starving while Tinubu encourages Governors and other public officials to emulate his wastage of funds and to flaunt their opulent lifestyles.
His crony across the road from the Villa, Senate President Godswill Akpabio, who reportedly earns more that N30 million a month (for doing little more than rubber stamping Tinubu’s wishes) derided Nigerian youths over their hunger protest last month.
Akpabio was captured on tape mocking youths planning to hit the streets to protest against Tinubu for misallocating resources and by that contributing to the lack of citizen’s purchasing power, besides hyper inflation.
“Those who want to protest can protest, but let us be here eating ….,” Akpabio said in the video clip, which he could not deny.
Ladidi Bako-Aiyebusi, Director of Nutrition Department in the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, disclosed the malnourishment on Wednesday at a five-day meeting with nutrition experts and stakeholders in Keffi Council of Nasarawa.
The ministry is holding the meeting in partnership with Civil Society-Scaling Up Nutrition in Nigeria (CS-SUNN) and other nutrition partners on a strategic advocacy policy for nutrition in Nigeria, per reporting by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).
Participants at the meeting include nutrition experts, academia, civil society organisations (CSOs).
Bako-Aiyebusi said the meeting would provide policy directions to guide nutrition issues in the country.
Currently, she warned, Nigeria faces a severe crisis of triple burden of malnutrition, evidenced by widespread macro and micronutrient deficiency, under-nutrition and over-nutrition with significant impact on health and socio-economic development.
“In addition, the 2021 National Food Consumption and Micronutrient Survey report shows that nearly 4.4 million children in the North East and North West regions are malnourished,” she said.
“Identified causes of malnutrition include inadequate access to food, poor food consumption, improper feeding and caring practices, economic and political structures, low economic status, inadequate health-seeking behaviors and low level of education among the populace.”
