The blame game continues in the frosty politics of Edo State, with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) condemning as a “travesty of plenary” the impeachment of the State House of Assembly Deputy Speaker, Festus Ebea.
Gov. Adams Oshiomhole
In another development, Osama Erediauwa, son of Benin traditional ruler, Akpolokpolo Erediauwa, has resigned as Executive Director, Government House and pitched his tent with the opposition PDP.
Governor Adams Oshiomhole, who belongs to the All Progressives Alliance (APC), had appointed him to add influence to his cabinet.
The PDP dismissed the impeachment Ebea as null and void, wondering how 15 lawmakers could constitute two-thirds of the Assembly to sack him.
But state APC Chairman, Aslem Ojezua, insisted that the notice of impeachment was signed by 16 lawmakers, more than the 13 required.
With the suspension of four members, he explained, only 20 members are, for now, legitimately entitled to participate in legislative business of the Assembly, which means that 13 is the two-thirds required.
State PDP Chairman, Dan Orbih, countered by alleging that APC lawmakers, “encouraged and supported” Oshiomhole, moved into his office and conducted “a travesty of plenary.”
He said he “laughed” when he watched what took place.
One beauty of the presidential system of government, he stressed, is the separation of powers “but what happened at Government House was an attempt to erode the principle of separation of powers.”
Orbih added that “because of Oshiomhole’s love for power” the PDP has raised an alarm over his attempt to “bring the judiciary under his control” and manipulate it to his favour, and also “annex” legislators.
