Ezechukwu, Nathaniel drag over 850 Athletes to Heat competitions in Lagos

No fewer than 850 athletes are expected to compete at the Athletic Heat 10th Anniversary Meet on Saturday, November 7, 2026, at the Yaba College of Technology Sports Complex in Lagos, with Nigerian internationals Miracle Ezechukwu, Samson Nathaniel and Adams Samuel Kure among the leading attractions.

The landmark competition will bring together established international athletes, emerging stars and grassroots competitors across several track and field disciplines as Athletic Heat celebrates a decade of promoting athletics development in Nigeria.

Ezechukwu, one of Nigeria’s brightest sprint prospects, is expected to feature in the women’s 100m following an impressive rise on the national and international athletics scene.

The teenage sprinter enjoyed a breakthrough in 2025, winning three gold medals at the African U-18 and U-20 Championships in Abeokuta.

She has maintained her impressive progression in 2026, setting personal bests of 11.15 seconds in the 100m and 22.77 seconds in the 200m.

At the African Senior Athletics Championships in Accra, Ghana, Ezechukwu finished fourth in the women’s 100m final before helping Nigeria win gold in the 4x100m relay in a championship-record time of 42.94 seconds.

Her participation is expected to add further quality to the women’s sprint field.

Nigerian quarter-miler Samson Nathaniel will also be one to watch, bringing significant international experience to the competition.

Nathaniel has represented Nigeria at the Olympic Games and World Athletics Championships and was part of the Nigerian team that won gold in the men’s 4x400m relay at the 2023 African Games in Accra.

He continued to compete internationally in 2026, clocking 45.89 seconds in the 400m at Addis Ababa Athletics Meet while contributing to Nigeria’s 4x400m relay campaign.

With a personal best of 45.23 seconds in the 400m, Nathaniel is expected to feature in the men’s 400m at the anniversary meet.

In the field events, Nigerian international javelin thrower Adams Samuel Kure will headline the men’s competition.

Kure claimed bronze at the Islamic Solidarity Games in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, in November 2025 with a throw of 76.01m, finishing behind Pakistan’s Arshad Nadeem and Muhammad Yasir.

He has also represented Nigeria at the African Senior Athletics Championships, strengthening his position among the country’s leading javelin throwers.

His appearance is expected to provide another major attraction for spectators at the Lagos competition.

The presence of the three internationals underscores the anniversary meet’s appeal as a platform for elite performers and developing athletes to compete at the same event.

Ahead of the competition, Athletic Heat has completed the seeding of events and allocation of bib numbers.

Athletes and coaches have been advised to check the Roster Athletics app for their event schedules, heat and flight assignments, and allocated bib numbers.

The senior men’s 100m has attracted 320 entries, with the top 32 athletes by ranking advancing to four finals. In the senior women’s 100m, the top 24 athletes will qualify for the finals.

In the age-grade categories, the U-15 100m will feature heats, with finalists determined by ranking. The U-11 boys’ 100m will have two heats and a final, while the top eight athletes in the U-11 girls’ 100m will advance to the final.

The 400m and 800m events, athletes have been seeded according to their season-best performances, with the fastest competitors grouped in Final A.

Hurdles finals will be restricted to six athletes each because of equipment availability, while the long jump competition will feature two flights based on performance levels.

Prizes and awards will be determined by the respective event prize structures, with athletes ranked according to their performances. Under-age athletes competing in throwing events will have their results recorded and uploaded but will not be eligible for prizes.

The organising committee has also urged athletes who will be unable to attend to notify the organisers on or before Tuesday, November 3, so their entries can be withdrawn and unnecessary Did Not Start (DNS) records avoided.

All participants are expected to arrive early, bring their allocated bib numbers and confirm their heat or flight assignments upon arrival.

The competition is scheduled to begin at 8:00 a.m. at the Yaba College of Technology Sports Complex in Lagos.

With more than 850 athletes expected and several Nigerian internationals set to feature, the 10th anniversary edition promises a competitive showcase of established stars and emerging talent as Athletic Heat marks a decade of contribution to athletics development.
