Nigerian singer, songwriter, actor and TV show host Charles Oputa, better known as Charly Boy, has said the outcome of the United States midterm elections—where the Democrats regained control of the House of Representatives and the Senate from the Republicans—shows that citizens can determine the direction of their government.

The veteran entertainer made this known on Wednesday, 4 November, in a post on Instagram following the projection of election results by various media outlets.

TheNiche had earlier reported that Democrats seized control of both the House of Representatives and the Senate in Tuesday’s midterm elections, dealing a major blow to the Trump administration.

Reacting to the outcome of the US midterm elections, Charly Boy urged Nigerians to use their votes to hold politicians accountable in the upcoming 2027 general elections.

According to the 76-year-old singer, American voters reminded politicians that political power belongs to the people, regardless of how powerful political structures may appear during polls.

‘America just give us another reminder say no matter how powerful you be, no matter how much political structure you get behind you, the people still get a voice, and that voice fit change the direction of government,’ he wrote.

Charly Boy also warned Nigerians against treating elections as opportunities to collect gifts from politicians.

‘Nigerians must also remember that our votes are our voices,’ he said.

He added: ‘Democracy no be spectator sport, it’s not about sharing rice.’
