MTN threatened with legal action over mast debris, property damage in Lagos

A property owner in Ikorodu, Lagos State, Pastor Sunday Enikuomehin, has demanded N25 million in compensation from MTN Nigeria Communications Plc over alleged damage to his property caused by debris falling from the telecommunications company’s mast.

Enikuomehin, through his solicitors, Benson Enikuomehin & Co., also demanded immediate repairs to the damaged roofs and measures to stop hard substances from falling from the mast onto the property at No. 1 and 3, Maja Street, Eyita, Ikorodu.

The demands were contained in a letter dated October 20, 2026, addressed to the Managing Director of MTN Nigeria Communications Plc.

According to the letter signed by Amenawon Addo, Head of Chambers (Administration) at Benson Enikuomehin & Co., the property had existed for more than 12 years before MTN erected its telecommunications mast in the area around 2010.

The solicitors alleged that debris from the mast’s equipment had fallen onto the property’s roofs, causing extensive damage and leakages whenever it rains.

They further claimed that the matter had been reported several times to the company’s security agent, who allegedly informed their client that previous complaints forwarded to the appropriate authorities within MTN had been ignored.

The lawyers accused the telecommunications company of negligence, arguing that it had a duty to ensure that its mast was safely constructed, regularly inspected and properly maintained to prevent damage to neighbouring properties and endangerment of residents.

They also expressed concern over the alleged continuous falling of hard substances from the mast, warning that the situation posed a potential threat to the safety of the property owner and other occupants of the building.

“The activities of your company portend great danger to the safety of our client and his property,” the letter stated, urging MTN to take immediate steps to address the alleged hazards.

The solicitors said their client was demanding N25 million to cover the damage to his property, the cost of repairs, and the alleged pain, anguish and apprehension he had experienced over the years.

They gave MTN 14 days from the receipt of the letter to address the complaints, warning that failure to comply would prompt legal action to seek redress.

The lawyers also threatened to escalate the matter to the appropriate regulatory agency responsible for supervising the telecommunications company if MTN failed to respond within the stipulated period.
