The Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) has mourned the victims of the tanker explosion at Oluku, along the Benin-Lagos Highway in Ovia North East Local Government Area of Edo State, calling for urgent measures to prevent similar tragedies.

The explosion, which occurred on Thursday, October 15, 2026, claimed lives, left several people injured and destroyed properties. In a statement signed by its Acting General Secretary, Comrade Otite Onohwowo, the union extended its condolences to Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, the affected families and residents of Oluku community.

NUPENG described the incident as tragic, expressing solidarity with the bereaved families and communities while praying for the repose of the souls of the deceased and the speedy recovery of those injured.

The union said the incident underscored the need for immediate and sustained action to address the deteriorating condition of major roads in Edo State and across the country.

It also expressed concern that fatal incidents continued to occur despite its collaboration with safety agencies to educate the public on the dangers of scooping fuel and other flammable substances from accident scenes.

NUPENG commended first responders and medical personnel for their prompt intervention and reaffirmed its commitment to working with the Edo State Government and other stakeholders to strengthen preventive safety measures.
