Chelsea captain Reece James is set to miss first-team action for the West London outfit for a while after undergoing successful minor knee surgery.
This was revealed by the English club in an official statement released on Friday, 16 October, through their official website and other club channels.
This means the defender will miss additional time and extend his absence from the squad after previously being sidelined by a thigh injury and missing several matches for England.
The 26-year-old was unavailable for Chelsea’s 5-1 win over Bournemouth last weekend after missing the international break with England.
He had started Chelsea’s first four games of the Premier League season but has not featured since the 2-2 draw with Hull on 12 September.

James missed several spells last season due to hamstring injuries and eventually missed two of England’s matches during the 2026 FIFA World Cup due to a strain.
Speaking about his latest surgery, Chelsea noted that James has already begun his road to recovery, adding that he will be supported by the club’s medical team during his rehabilitation.
The club went on to wish the right-back a speedy recovery and pledged to support him on his “road to return.”
The club’s statement read, “Captain Reece James has undergone successful minor knee surgery.
“The 26-year-old was absent from Saturday’s 5-1 victory over Bournemouth at Stamford Bridge while medical assessments took place following the injury suffered in training. Those assessments confirmed surgery would be the required course of action.
“Reece has already begun his road to recovery and will be supported by the club’s medical department at Cobham during this rehabilitation phase. Everyone at Chelsea wishes Reece a speedy recovery and will support him on his road to return.”
