Fintiri approved the pardons and commutation to take immediate effect, adding that all legal formalities have been concluded.

In commemoration of Nigeria’s 2026 Independence Day anniversary, Adamawa State Governor, Ahmadu Fintiri, has pardoned nine inmates serving various sentences in correctional facilities within the state and beyond.
This was disclosed in a press statement issued in the early hours of Thursday by the governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Humwashi Wonosikou.
According to him, those pardoned and discharged are Abubakar Dajo, serving at the Maximum Security Custodial Centre in Jos, Plateau State, as well as Zabadi Ayuba and Salvation Nyamso, both serving at the Numan Custodial Centre, Adamawa State.
The list of discharged inmates also includes Amir Idris, Mohammed Saidu, Yaro Sambo, Buhari Salisu, Urube Samuel, and Bamaiyi Amos, who were released from the Jimeta, Ganye, Guyuk, Yola Old, and Kojoli Custodial Centres, respectively.
In addition to these, Governor Fintiri approved the commutation of the death sentence imposed on Saidu Abdullahi, an inmate at the Yola Old Custodial Centre, to life imprisonment.
The statement read: “The governor acted on the advice of the Advisory Committee on the Prerogative of Mercy and in the exercise of the powers conferred on him by Section 212(1)(d) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended).”
Wonosikou noted that Fintiri ordered the release of the inmates to mark Nigeria’s 66th Independence Day anniversary, adding, “The pardons and commutation take immediate effect, as all legal formalities have been concluded with the Nigerian Correctional Service.”
