Movie star and firm producer, Mary Remmy Njoku, has challenged the “gold diggers” label slammed on women who profit from their rich lovers, wondering why men who enjoy similar privileges from their wealthy and successful friends do not get a similar tag.

The thespian, who was reacting to the way women are often judged for benefiting from the generosity of wealthy men, asked the question in a recent post shared on her official social media handle.

Njoku, during her narrative, gave an example of a man identified as Emeka, who she claimed returned home after becoming successful and had 17 grown men constantly around him.

According to her, despite eating his food, wearing clothes he bought, and having their bills paid by him, their relationship with him is described as “brotherhood”, “networking”, and “loyalty.”

Njoku asked, “If benefiting from a wealthy person’s generosity makes a woman a gold digger, what exactly do we call the 17 men eating his food, wearing what he bought, enjoying his money, and calling themselves his boys?”

She went on to argue that treating similar circumstances differently when they apply to men is nothing but a “double standard”.

“The double standard isn’t that people love money. It’s that when men benefit from proximity to wealth, we give the behaviour a respectable name. When women do the same thing, we give it a dirty one,” the 41-year-old actress added.

Njoku concluded by asserting that men, women, friends, relatives, and employees can all be drawn to people whose wealth or position can make their lives easier.
