Catastrophic flash Flood in Nepal kills more than 900

Nepali and Chinese authorities have confirmed the death of over 900 people, with nearly 5000 found missing, following the disastrous flash flood that hit the Nepal-China Border Region on Wednesday, August 26, 2026. Rescue operations are still ongoing as authorities work to locate survivors and recover the bodies of those presumed dead.
Nepal witnessed one of the most devastating floods in the Nepal-China Border region, claiming hundreds of lives and destroying several infrastructure, including hydropower facilities. The flash flood is said to have been triggered by a glacier collapse near the Langtang Lirung peak. The collapse reportedly generated a massive surge, sending an avalanche of ice and rock down the Lhende River valley along the Nepal–Tibet border.
Several infrastructure and buildings were swept away, as a result, by the force of the flood. Experts have linked the incident to growing concerns over climate change and global warming, which are contributing to the rapid melting of the Himalayas.
Nepali authorities reported on Monday that the death toll had risen to 903, with 4,247 people still missing. Over 500 foreign nationals are still unaccounted for.
Among those missing are over 900 workers who were reportedly stationed at a series of hydropower facilities along the rivers that swelled up amid the floods, according to Nepal’s National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority.
On the Chinese side, authorities said that 16 people were killed in Tibet, with 546 missing. 261 foreign nationals are unaccounted for, according to Chinese authorities.
Several videos displaying this catastrophic event have been circulating online, drawing sympathy and outrage from people around the world.
Thousands of people have been displaced from their homes, while shortages of supplies remain a concern. Nepal’s government has activated its Natural Disaster Relief Fund to support victims and strengthen ongoing rescue efforts. Several countries have also pledged financial assistance and sent relief supplies to support Nepal during this crisis.
