NDC demands suspension of Lagos CP over attendance at pro-APC ‘City Boy Movement’ event
The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has called for the immediate suspension of Lagos State Commissioner of Police, CP Tijani Fatai, over what it described as partisan conduct.
The demand followed the inauguration of the Lagos chapter of the City Boy Movement on Tuesday in Ikeja. The group said it will mobilise youths and grassroots supporters for President Bola Tinubu’s re-election in the 2027 elections.
The event was attended by political leaders, traditional rulers, youth leaders and members of the All Progressives Congress (APC). Viral videos circulating on social media showed CP Fatai arriving at the venue and exchanging pleasantries with members of the movement.
Reacting in a post on X on Tuesday, the NDC described the police commissioner’s presence at the event as inappropriate and a breach of neutrality expected of the police.
“We condemn in the strongest terms the appearance of the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, CP Tijani, at a partisan event promoting a particular candidate in the upcoming general election,” the opposition party said.
The NDC added that the APC-led administrations have shown no respect for public institutions, and that a police commissioner attending such an event “can only point to one thing: He will be biased in the discharge of his duties during the elections.”
The party therefore demanded that the police authorities “immediately suspend and sanction the Commissioner of Police, CP Tijani.”
It also urged the Force to make a firm commitment to neutrality ahead of the 2027 elections, and to ensure the protection of voters and supporters of all candidates regardless of party, religion or ethnicity.
“We further demand that the Police authorities protect voters and supporters of other candidates who are not members of the ruling party. That the Police ensure the safety of the lives and property of all voters, regardless of religion, ethnicity, or party affiliation,” the statement read.
The NDC further called on CP Fatai to “tender his resignation immediately for denigrating the institution of the Police.”
