Afrobeats singer and rapper Okafor Uchenna Victor, better known as Mr Real, has condemned First Lady Oluremi Tinubu’s suggestion that Nigerians should take to petty trading amid the worsening economic hardship in the country.
The ‘Legbegbe’ hitmaker faulted the advice in a now-trending post shared on his official Instagram page.
Mrs Tinubu recently encouraged poor Nigerians to engage in small businesses such as selling akara (bean cakes), roasted corn, and kuli-kuli (peanut cakes), adding that these trades do not require significant start-up capital.
In a video which circulated online, she said: “To start an akara business doesn’t take a lot of money. To start roasting corn or kuli-kuli doesn’t take much.
“We didn’t give them a loan, we gave them a grant. We have encouraged Nigerians as best as we could. I also gave to several others.”
Her counsel, however, did not go down well with some Nigerians, who took to various social media platforms to berate her for the comment.
Joining those criticising the First Lady, Mr Real described her statement as insensitive. He went on to state that he would rather turn to banditry than go into petty trading as Mrs Tinubu suggested.
The 29-year-old artist added that he is confident the government would eventually grant him amnesty and rehabilitate him if he became a bandit.
Mr Real wrote: “I go rather join bandit than to sell kulikuli and akara. And my target will be only politicians. At least if I am caught, they will rehabilitate me.”
