Uba Sani promises state support for family of woman lynched over false kidnap claim

Uba Sani, governor of Kaduna state, says his government will shoulder the responsibility of the family of Ummulkhairi Usman Aliyu, the lady who was murdered by a mob at Maraban Jos, a town on the Kaduna-Zaria expressway.

Last Sunday, the Kaduna police command said Ummulkhairi was killed and set ablaze by a mob over allegations of child theft.

Mansir Hassan, public relations officer of the command, said in a statement that at about 10 am, the divisional police officer (DPO) of Maraban Jos received a distress call that a woman was being attacked by a mob over allegations of child theft without proof to support the claim.

Hassan said the DPO led officers to the scene, rescued the woman, and moved her to the station for safety and investigation, but a mob overpowered officers at the station and killed the woman.

Speaking during a condolence visit to the bereaved family on Saturday, Sani said his administration will cater to the upkeep of the husband and four children, including sponsoring the latter’s education.

Sani condemned the mob action, vowing that the killers would be brought to justice.

The governor explained that he was out of the state on an official assignment when the murder occurred, noting that he had earlier sent senior government officials to pay condolences to the family.

“I’m also working with the commissioner of police, the state’s director of the Department of State Services (DSS), as well as all the relevant security agencies in Kaduna State, to get to the root of the matter,” Sani said

“And I’m happy to say that they have done an extensive investigation into this incident. As we are speaking, about 41 persons have been charged with culpable homicide.

“And about 41 went through investigation. Thirty suspects have also been charged with unlawful assembly.”

Sani pledged that all those who were involved in the murder would face the law, no matter their status or number, to serve as a deterrent.

The governor added that although the security agencies did their best, they should also conduct a thorough investigation into the complicity of some of their personnel.
