Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo has spoken on the possibility of facing Lionel Messi and Argentina in the 2026 World Cup, saying it would be ‘top’ to do so.

He made this known while addressing journalists after scoring a brace in Portugal’s 5-0 thrashing of Uzbekistan on Tuesday.

Roberto Martínez’s men, who were criticised following a 1-1 draw against DR Congo in their opening game of the tournament, went top of Group K with four points following the statement win.

Meanwhile, Portugal and Argentina are likely to meet in the quarter-finals of this year’s World Cup if both nations win their respective groups and subsequently advance through the Round of 32 and Round of 16.

While answering members of the press, he said: “Facing Leo Messi at the World Cup? The question doesn’t make a lot of sense… but OK. It would be top.

’But my focus was on today. We won, I have been able to score, and we keep going together. I am happy.’
