The oil-palm slender shoot,

Double character has.

Truly as the baby frond,

All innocence and tenderness.

But as the god’s arrowy courier,

All complicity and powerfulness.

If a man in anger swears,

With the young skybound spear,

Straight it goes to strike with force,

At the gods’ chest so broad.

Pierces to touch their fiery heart,

And so surely their seal obtains.

Should the swearer then default,

On the subject of the oath,

The gods will in anger strike,

And tragedy on the man visit.

For the message sent by the palm frond,

To their heart, is not a joke.
