Liverpool winger Luis Díaz has insisted that match referee Slavko Vinčić was correct to show a red card to Real Madrid midfielder Eduardo Camavinga during the UEFA Champions League (UCL) quarter-final second-leg tie on Wednesday night.

Díaz made his feelings known after the European encounter between the two clubs while speaking with El Chiringuito.

Real Madrid were eliminated from the Champions League after losing 4–3 to Bayern Munich in Germany.

An Arda Güler brace and a goal from Kylian Mbappé had ensured Los Blancos held a 3–2 lead on the night.

However, the momentum shifted following Vinčić’s controversial decision to send off Camavinga in the 86th minute.

The Frenchman received a second yellow card for holding onto the ball after Bayern had been awarded a free kick.

With only four minutes remaining, Vincent Kompany’s men scored twice to progress to the semi-finals with a 6–4 aggregate scoreline, following their 2–1 victory in the first leg in Madrid.

Reacting to the dismissal, Diaz argued that the French international left the official with no choice.

“The referee was right to send Camavinga off,” Diaz said. “We wanted to take the free kick quickly and he didn’t release the ball.”
