Sunderland and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DR Congo) defender, Noah Sadiki, has said the substitution of Nigerian striker, Victor Osimhen, helped his team win the FIFA World Cup qualifying play-off final played on Sunday in Rabat, Morocco.
Osimhen, after sustaining an injury during the encounter, was replaced by teammate Akor Adams at half-time as the Leopards defeated the Super Eagles 4-3 on penalties.
The match had ended in a 1-1 draw after 120 minutes, thanks to goals from Frank Onyeka and Mechak Elia.
DR Congo went on to defeat Chelle’s men on penalties, as Calvin Bassey, Moses Simon, and Semi Ajayi all missed their kicks for Nigeria.

With the victory, they clinched the ticket to represent Africa at the intercontinental play-off taking place next March in Mexico.
Speaking after the intriguing encounter, Sadiki admitted that Osimhen’s absence aided his team.
He also mentioned that DR Congo practiced penalties while preparing for the World Cup play-off.
“It helps [Osimhen’s injury]. We know that Osimhen is a big player. They have other qualities in front.” Sadiki said while addressing journalists.
He added, “We knew he was their star player, and if he was out, it would be a bit easier, and we practiced penalties.”
