A gas explosion on Sunday devastated a section of the Orisunmibare Market, off Baale Street in the Orile-Iganmu area of Lagos, destroying several shops with goods worth millions of naira, but without taking human lives.
The fire erupted around 2.13p.m and sent traders and residents scampering for safety.
The explosion spread from a gas retail outlet housing multiple cylinders of varying sizes.
Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service Director, Margaret Adeseye, confirmed the incident and said personnel promptly responded and brought it under control.
“No lives were lost, except for one person who sustained a minor hand injury,” she explained.
In a related development, firefighters also at the weekend responded to a 33,000-litre petrol tanker accident along the Apapa-Oshodi Expressway, near Berger Car Depot.
The tanker spilled its content after ramming into a Mercedes-Benz Jeep and seven other stationary vehicles displayed for sale.
Adeseye said: “Prompt intervention by the Ajegunle and Ijegun-Egba Fire crews prevented the spill from escalating into another disaster. The remaining fuel has been safely transferred to another tanker, while recovery of damaged vehicles is ongoing.”
