Benfica have parted ways with their manager, Bruno Lage following their UEFA Champions League (UCL) defeat to Azerbaijani club, Qarabag on Tuesday night.
His sack was announced early Wednesday morning by the Portuguese club’s president, Rui Costa.
Benfica raced to an early 2-0 lead in the game but allowed their visitors to fight back and win the encounter 3-2.
Despite guiding them to the Portuguese League Cup and a second-place finish last season, the club relieved him of his duties a few hours after the surprise home defeat.
While announcing the decision, Rui Costa said, “Today we reached an agreement with Bruno Lage to step down as Benfica’s coach… we believe it’s time for a change.
“Regarding the next coach, we expect to have the new one on the bench at Vila das Aves next Saturday.
“The Benfica coach must be a winner. We won’t talk about names”

Confirming the development, Italian journalist and transfer expert, Fabrizio Romano said the club and former Chelsea coach are currently discussing the terms of the contract.
Speaking via his X handle, he wrote, “Benfica are in advanced talks with José Mourinho after Bruno Lage got sacked overnight! ❤️?.
“Understand Mourinho has opened doors to Benfica move as he wants to return to coaching immediately.
“The agreement could be sealed soon. ?”
