Nigeria kept their slim hopes of automatic qualification for the 2026 Fifa World Cup alive with a nervy 1-0 win over Rwanda in Uyo on Saturday.

Eric Chelle’s men came into the game sitting in fourth place with seven points, nine behind leaders South Africa.

The Super Eagles thought they had opened the scoring in the first half, but Victor Osimhen’s tap-in was ruled out for offside.

Replays showed Osimhen was onside, but VAR was not in use at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium.

However, the only goal of the game came in the second half, after substitute Tolu Arokodare volleyed the ball in from two yards.

Nigeria with the win, leapfrog the Rwandans and go third in Group C, six points behind leaders South Africa – who they face in Bloemfontein in a crunch game on Tuesday
