Peter Obi has condemned the assault on a female member of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) in Anambra where he was Governor between 2006 and 2014.

He described the incident on X as “inhumane, barbaric and primitive” and said it made him feel “ashamed and heartbroken” that such an act could take place in 2025.

Obi was reacting to viral video showing armed personnel of Operation Udo Ga-Achi – also known as the Agunechemba Vigilante Group – who invaded a corps members’ lodge in Oba in Idemili South Council of the state and assault Jennifer Edema Elohor and some of her colleagues.

The video shows Elohor being beaten and stripped naked.

Obi insisted that no society should tolerate the abuse, humiliation, and dehumanisation of its citizens, particularly women and the vulnerable.

“That young girl could have been anyone’s daughter, sister, or even mine. What happened is not only a violation of law and morality, but also a direct assault on our collective humanity,” Obi wrote.

He urged the authorities to ensure that those responsible are apprehended and prosecuted to serve as a deterrent against similar acts in the future.

He also demanded stronger safeguards, policies, and communal values to protect the weak and uphold the dignity of every citizen.

“Our humanity must always come first. Without it, we are nothing but a people adrift in cruelty.”

The Haven 360 Foundation shared the video on Facebook on Monday with the text: “We strongly condemn the brutal assault and violation of the rights of the National Youth Service Corps members by operatives of the Operation Udo Ga-Achi or ‘Agunechemba Vigilante Group’ in Anambra State.

“On July 23, 2025, these state actors stormed the corpers’ lodge, accusing the members of being ‘Yahoo people’, despite their prompt production of their NYSC identification cards and uniforms.

“The assault was particularly egregious in the case of Jennifer Edema Elohor, who was beaten, stripped naked, and left exposed and covered in blood.

“The victims were subjected to unsavoury, horrible, sexually degrading words and actions, including threats of sexual violation.”

On Tuesday, Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s  Community Security Adviser, Ken Emeakayi, whose office oversees the security outfit, described the incident as “unfortunate and unacceptable.”

Emeakayi said even though the operatives were carrying out their lawful duties, they went overboard, and those involved in the assault have been arrested and are under investigation.
