Officer caught on video assaulting Uber driver arrested, police reiterate non-tolerance of misconduct

Police in Lagos have arrested Inspector Obi Modestus who was captured on a viral video physically assaulting an Uber driver in the metropolis.

The footage, widely circulated on X (Twitter) by Oyindamola (@dammiedammie35), shows the officer repeatedly striking the driver in a manner that has drawn widespread outrage.

Oyindamola captioned the post: “A new video of Nigerian policemen violently assaulting an Uber driver. Please spread this video, this is someone’s father they’re beating like an animal.”

Lagos Police Command spokesperson Benjamin Hundeyin confirmed that  Modestus has been summoned by the Complaint Response Unit (CRU) of the command and will be transferred to the Provost Department for disciplinary proceedings.

“The Lagos State Police Command, under the leadership of CP Owohunwa Jimoh, will not condone any form of incivility to members of the public,” Hundeyin stressed.
