Nigeria reaffirms commitment to global peace and security at UN meeting

The Minister of Defence, Mohammed Badaru Abubakar has reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to the United Nations (UN) and the global community in promoting peace and security. Badaru made the commitment during the second day of the Plenary High-Level Pledging Session of the United Nations Peacekeeping Ministerial 2025.
The Minister highlighted Nigeria’s active participation in international peacekeeping efforts, noting the country’s rotation of the Base Protection Force deployed with the United Nations Interim Security Force in Abyei, as well as the Formed Police Unit at the United Nations Transition Mission in Somalia.

In his address, Badaru emphasized Nigeria’s leadership role in sub-regional peace initiatives under the auspices of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and the African Union (AU). He cited Nigeria’s significant contributions to peacekeeping missions in Sierra Leone and Liberia, and more recently engagements in The Gambia and Guinea Bissau.
Furthermore, Minister Badaru announced Nigeria’s renewed pledges to the Peacekeeping Capability Readiness System, adding five additional commitments aimed at enhancing Nigeria’s readiness to support global peacekeeping efforts. The Minister reiterated Nigeria’s dedication to fostering stability and security, both regionally and globally.
Badaru is currently attending the Ministerial 2025, taking place in Berlin, Germany. The event, themed “Future of Peacekeeping,” brings together leaders and key stakeholders from around the globe to discuss the evolving landscape of peacekeeping operations and collaborative efforts to promote global security.
Among the distinguished attendees are Antonio Guterres, the United Nations Secretary General; Boris Pistorius, Minister of Defence of the Federal Republic of Germany; and Dr. Joham Wadephul, Minister for Foreign Affairs of the Federal Republic of Germany. Their participation underscores the importance of international cooperation in addressing contemporary security challenges.
Upon his arrival, Minister Badaru was received by Gunther Krichbaum, State Minister for Europe at the Federal Foreign Office, and Dr. Nils Schmid, Parliamentary State Minister of Defence. These meetings set the stage for fruitful discussions on Nigeria’s role in global peacekeeping efforts and the strengthening of bilateral relations with Germany.
During the Ministerial Meeting, Badaru engaged in high-level bilateral side meeting with Niels Annen, the German State Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development. They explored various topics, including the vast economic potentials for Nigeria and opportunities for collaboration within the military-industrial complex.
In another bilateral side meeting with Dr Morissanda Kouyate, the Guinean Minister of Foreign Affairs and Minister Badaru, discussed security issues, regional stability and importance of value addition to natural resources to boost national development.
