Police recover fake currencies worth over N129b in Kano, arrest five

Police noted that the operation was part of efforts to curb financial crimes and protect the country’s economy

The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) on Wednesday disclosed that its men recovered counterfeit currencies valued at over N129 billion in Kano State.

Speaking on the incident in a statement issued by the Force Spokesperson, Muyiwa Adejobi, the police said the operation was carried out on December 8, 2024, in Gwale, Kano.

According to the police PRO, it led to the arrest of three suspects and the discovery of a large amount of counterfeit currency.

Police went on to reveal that the operation was part of its efforts to curb financial crimes and protect the country’s economy.

The statement read, “On December 8, 2024, at Gwale, Kano, operatives, acting on credible intelligence, apprehended one Nura Ibrahim and discovered counterfeit currency amounting to N129,542,823,000. The breakdown of the counterfeit money includes $3,366,000 in counterfeit US dollars, 51,970 counterfeit CFA francs, and N1,443,000 in counterfeit naira notes.”

Adejobi noted that further investigations led to the arrest of two accomplices, identified as Muhammed Muntari and Usman Abdullahi, who are believed to be part of the counterfeit operation.

He also emphasized the significance of the arrests, noting police’s commitment to tackling financial crimes.

The Force reassured the public of its commitment to safeguarding the country’s economy from criminal elements.
