Abuja affirms N70k minimum wage for review amid high inflation

Labour and Employment Minister of State Nkeiruka Onyejeocha has affirmed that the federal government remains committed to reviewing the N70,000 minimum wage approved in 2024 after three years.
Onyejeocha said the minimum wage will undergo a review in less than two years’ time when she gave a briefing in Umuahia after meeting with labour leaders.
According to her, President Bola Tinubu is committed to the welfare of workers and determined to fulfill every promise made to them.
“We are not going to allow minimum wage review to be forever. It used to be about five years, but now, in three year’s time, which is less than two years [awa], we will also review the minimum wage,” Onyejeocha stressed.
Tinubu approved the N70,000 minimum wage in July 2024 with a promise to review it every three years – a pledge Onyejeocha insisted has been made and documented.
She said decided to meet with labour leaders in Abia her home state who she described as her constituents, “to wish them well”, after spending her Yuletide holidays in the state.
“I reminded them that we should have a strike-free year, where we will be able to work with the government in partnership, knowing that if we are in peace, we will be more productive,” she disclosed.
Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) Abia chapter Chairman Ogbomna Okoro commended Onyejeocha, saying labour is proud of her and eager to collaborate with her.
Onyejeocha also held a roundtable with the Abia State Council of Traditional Rulers at which she explained various federal government policies.
