About five people were reportedly abducted by gunmen at Obbo-Ayegunle in Ekiti Council of Kwara at the weekend when they were returning to their base in Odo-Owa from a wedding ceremony in Ope, a town neighbouring Kogi.
The victims, who were kidnapped at about 4pm on Saturday, include Oloye Oyewole Abolarin, the head of hunters in Odo-Owa; his wife Funmilayo; Tunde Oladipo and his wife; and one other person identified as Bose, all of Agbele Igbede compound in Odo-Owa community.
The abductors have reached out to their families demanding N100 million ransom to release the captives.
Family members and the community have reportedly started contributions to meet the demand of the kidnappers, per Daily Post.
And they have appealed to Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq and security agencies to help rescue the victims.
A new kidnap incident was also said to have occurred on Monday along the Omu-Aran highway.
More people killed in road crashes than by terrorists, FRSC laments
In another news on road travel, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Kano Sector Commander, Umar Matazu, has disclosed that road traffic accidents cause more fatalities than terrorist attacks in the country.
Matazu made the disclosure when he visited on Tuesday the new leadership of the State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) in Kano, where he underscored the high number of fatalities from road crashes that have to be reduced.
He pitched for greater media support in raising awareness on road safety and adherence to traffic regulations, according to Vanguard.
“There is no way you have an attack killing more than 10 people, but in a traffic crash, you can have more than 40 people killed. From October until now, the number of people killed in road traffic crashes is higher than those killed by terrorists or bandits,” Matazu lamented.
NUJ Kano Council Chairman Suleiman Dederi, represented by Vice Chairman Mustapha Gambo, gave an assurance to the FRSC of the council’s full support in road safety efforts.
He also commended the age-long cordial relationship between the NUJ and the FRSC.
