Ondo issues rules to event organisers on crowd control measures, warns of prosecution
Ondo Government has issued directives to regulate public gatherings, protect lives and property during events in order to stave off the stampedes that caused the deaths of scores of people across Oyo, Abuja, and Anambra in recent days.
Ondo Attorney General and Justice Commissioner Olukayode Ajulo explained that he issued the directives based on Section 195 of the Constitution and Sections 62 and 95 of the Administration of Criminal Justice Law of Ondo State 2015 as well as on Sections 2 and 4 of the Nigeria Police Act 2020.
Ajulo said the rules, documented in Directive No. 01-1224, are to improve crowd control measures and prioritise public safety but respect citizens’ constitutional rights to peaceful assembly.
He warned that violations of the directives may result in legal action against event organisers or participants.
Ajulo stressed that the directives also require greater collaboration between event organisers, law enforcement agencies, and local government to protect lives and property and urged full compliance from all parties involved.
“These crowd control measures are a testament to Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa’s commitment to fostering a secure environment for public gatherings in Ondo State. Stakeholders are advised to familiarise themselves with the directives to avoid legal repercussions and contribute to a safer society,” Ajulo pleaded.
The directives stress the importance of proactive measures, such as communication protocols, venue accessibility, use of drones, CCTV, and availability of security personnel among requirements.
