Afenifere kicks against calls for coup d’etat to sack Tinubu, says democracy is better

By Jeph Ajobaju, Chief Copy Editor

Afenifere, though a staunch critic of Bola Tinubu, has condemned calls mostly heard in the North for the President to be overthrown through a military coup d’etat that plagued Nigeria for most of the years from independence in 1960 until 1999.

During the hunger protest which lasted from August 1 to August 10, Northern youths waved Russian flags across states in the region and chanted demand for the military to topple Tinubu for being intentionally insensitive to national hardship by wasting resources that could be ploughed into social infrastructure to provide succour.

Afenifere National Publicity Secretary Jare Ajayi reacted in a statement, alerting that Nigeria’s democratic dispensation “should not be sacrificed or truncated for any reason.”

He added: “Whether the flags belonged to Russia or the [Nigerian] army, the message is more or less the same – inciting the taking-over of government through an unconstitutional means.

“It would be a height of self-delusion to assume that the intervention of either the military or a foreign power will put an automatic stop to the hunger in the land.”

Ajayi insisted democracy “is still the best in our current situation because of its inherent characteristics of making the people the custodians of political mandate. Its elastic nature allows various tendencies to operate – as long as they do so within the ambit of the law.

“This is a far cry from what is obtainable under a military government.”

He implored Nigerians, especially youths, to be watchful as some people used the protests to advance personal causes.
